What is aesthetic dentistry?
Aesthetic dentistry (or esthetic dentistry) refers to all the treatments that improve the appearance of the teeth: their color, shape, position and the relationship between the teeth and the gums.
Unlike restorative dentistry, which focuses on function, cosmetic dentistry combines functional and aesthetic considerations. A study of 235 patients found that 52.8% were dissatisfied with the general appearance of their teeth, and tooth color was the most common reason for dissatisfaction (56.2%) (Tin-Oo MM et al., BMC Oral Health, 2011).
At the clinic of Dr Haim Aseriel, a US-trained dentist (DDS, NYU College of Dentistry), cosmetic treatment follows a personalized plan built on a conservative approach that aims to preserve natural teeth. The consultation is held in English, and you leave with a written treatment plan and an itemized estimate.
When should you consider cosmetic dental treatment?
The right time is when the bite is stable and the gums are healthy: cosmetic work placed on an unhealthy foundation compromises the long-term result.
In practice, most patients come for a cosmetic consultation only after years of feeling uncomfortable with their smile, whereas an early assessment often allows a simpler, more conservative treatment.
- Dark or yellow teeth: a color that affects self-confidence (see teeth whitening)
- Chipped or worn teeth: an aesthetic and functional problem that calls for front teeth restoration
- Gaps between teeth: spaces that many patients find unsightly (see gap between teeth)
- Crooked teeth: straightening improves both appearance and ease of cleaning
- A high gum line: a "short teeth" look that can be corrected with a minor procedure
Technology at the clinic
At the clinic, impressions are taken with a Shining 3D Aoralscan 3 intraoral scanner, without impression paste, and the 3D model is used to plan the result before treatment.
At the clinic, crowns and veneers are designed and made with computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in the clinic's own dental lab, and gentle surgical techniques are used for gum contouring. The tools suited to your case are explained during the consultation.
The most common veneer materials, zirconia and E-MAX (lithium disilicate) ceramics, contain no metal.
For direct restorations, modern tooth-colored composite resins are matched to the shade of your teeth.
Cosmetic dentistry procedures patients ask for most
Teeth whitening tops the list: in a survey of 377 general dentists, 54.7% named it as the cosmetic treatment their patients requested most often (Abbasi MS et al., Healthcare, 2022).
The golden proportion in smile design
The golden proportion is a mathematical principle according to which the visible width of the central incisor, seen from the front, is 1.618 times that of the tooth next to it. It is one aid in smile design, not a fixed rule: the right proportions also depend on each patient's face.
In practice, a successful smile design combines tooth proportions, the lip line and the shape of the face, three parameters that cannot be judged by eye alone. Dr Aseriel plans each cosmetic case with DSD (Digital Smile Design) software, which takes all of them into account. For what affects the cost of veneers, see veneers cost.
Whitening vital (living) teeth
Whitening suits healthy teeth that have darkened with age, coffee, tea, smoking or certain medications, and it does not remove any tooth structure. Teeth whitening in Jerusalem is done in the office (without laser) or at home with custom-made trays, and a professional cleaning with the dental hygienist helps keep the result over time.

Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers (see also dental veneers) are a comprehensive cosmetic solution: thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of the teeth that change color, shape and size at the same time.
For example, a patient with short, dark teeth of uneven shade can improve the look of the smile in a few visits, sometimes without separate straightening or whitening. E-MAX veneers mimic the natural translucency of enamel. With good care, porcelain veneers usually last many years.
Closing gaps between teeth
Spaces between the front teeth are one of the most common reasons for a cosmetic consultation. Depending on the size of the gap and the condition of the neighboring teeth, there are several options, each with its own characteristics (more in our guide to the gap between teeth).
01
Direct composite bonding
A quick treatment, often in one visit and without preparing the tooth; suited to small gaps.
02
Porcelain veneers
A more refined aesthetic result; suited to medium to large gaps.
03
Orthodontic treatment
Fully conservative; suited when the teeth are also crooked.
The choice between these three options depends on the size of the gap, the neighboring teeth and your expectations, which is why every decision requires a personal clinical assessment.
Straightening teeth with clear aligners has become one of the most requested cosmetic treatments of the last decade, especially among adults who do not want metal braces. Invisalign in Jerusalem offers nearly invisible orthodontic treatment.
Unlike fixed braces, clear aligners can be removed to eat and brush, which makes oral hygiene easier during treatment.
Before treatment starts, a digital simulation shows the planned tooth movement and the expected result. More in our guide to teeth straightening.
Digital smile design is an essential step before any extensive cosmetic treatment: it lets the dentist and the patient agree on the result before any irreversible work.
Smile planning relies on facial and intraoral photographs, digital measurements and direct communication with the clinic's dental lab. It is especially useful for restorations involving more than two teeth, because it reduces the need for adjustments afterwards.
A broken tooth is both an aesthetic and a functional problem. Contrary to a common belief, most broken teeth do not need to be extracted and can be fully restored.
The right repair depends on where the fracture is, how deep it goes and the condition of the root, not on how bad it looks.
Superficial chips are usually repaired with composite bonding in a single visit. Deeper fractures may need an E-MAX or zirconia crown. When the fracture extends below the gum line, a more thorough assessment is needed, sometimes with an oral surgeon, before deciding on the final treatment. See also broken tooth repair, front teeth restoration and, when teeth are missing, full mouth rehabilitation.
The table sums up the main differences between these treatments. The number of visits is an estimate, set at the examination for each case.
| Treatment | What it corrects | Reversible? | Estimated visits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitening | The color of natural teeth (not crowns, veneers or fillings) | Removes no tooth structure; the shade may darken again over time | One or a few office visits, or home trays as directed by the dentist |
| Porcelain veneers | Color, shape and size of the front teeth | Usually not: a thin layer of enamel is generally removed | Usually two; sometimes one day with the clinic's lab, depending on the case |
| Composite veneers | Color and shape, small chips and small gaps | Usually yes: no or minimal tooth preparation | Usually one visit |
| Gap closure | Spaces between the front teeth | Depends on the method: composite usually yes, porcelain no, orthodontics removes no tooth structure | From one visit (composite) to several months (orthodontics) |
| Clear aligners | Crooked, crowded or spaced teeth | Remove no tooth structure, except minimal reshaping between teeth in some cases | Follow-up visits over several months, according to the plan |
| Crown lengthening | Teeth that look short and a gummy smile | No: a surgical procedure on the gum tissue, sometimes on the bone | One procedure under local anesthesia, then follow-up visits during healing |

Cosmetic dentistry: frequently asked questions
Cosmetic dentistry (also called aesthetic or esthetic dentistry) covers treatments that improve the appearance of the teeth: their color, shape, position and the balance between the teeth and the gums. It includes teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, composite bonding, orthodontic treatment such as clear aligners, and gum contouring, and it combines functional and aesthetic considerations.
Cosmetic dental treatment is best done when the teeth and gums are healthy and the bite is stable. Tooth decay, gum disease or a bite problem are treated first, because cosmetic work placed on an unhealthy foundation compromises the long-term result.
Professional teeth whitening does not require removing any tooth structure, unlike porcelain veneers. Its most common side effect is temporary, mild to moderate tooth sensitivity: according to the American Dental Association (ADA), it affects up to two thirds of patients at the start of treatment and usually goes away. Whitening only lightens natural teeth, not crowns, veneers or fillings.
Porcelain veneers usually last many years; how long depends on oral hygiene, habits such as teeth grinding (bruxism) and regular check-ups. Veneers are thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of the teeth that can change their color, shape and size at the same time.
A gap between the front teeth (diastema) is closed in three main ways: direct composite bonding, porcelain veneers or orthodontic treatment. The choice depends on the size of the gap, the condition of the neighboring teeth and the patient's expectations, so it is made after a personal examination.
