Zirconia veneers: matching the veneer shade with a shade guide

Zirconia veneers: why choose zirconia?

Zirconia veneers are one of several ways to improve the shape and color of the front teeth, alongside porcelain veneers, E.max veneers and composite veneers. Zirconia is considered mainly when an especially strong, metal-free material is needed. The veneers can be designed from a digital scan and milled with CAD/CAM technology for a precise fit.

You may also see them called "zirconium veneers": the material is in fact zirconia, or zirconium dioxide, a ceramic, not the metal zirconium. Zirconia is chosen for its strength, the absence of metal and its good biological compatibility with the tissues of the mouth. At Dr Haim Aseriel's dental clinic in Jerusalem, the material is chosen after an examination, based on the condition of the tooth, the bite and your aesthetic expectations: zirconia veneers are offered mainly to patients with bite problems or teeth grinding (bruxism), and E.max veneers when a natural look is the main concern. The consultation is held in English and ends with a written treatment plan.

What are zirconia veneers, and when can they be used?

Dental zirconia is a ceramic used in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. It is made of zirconium dioxide, processed to give it high strength, and combines that strength with a tooth-colored, metal-free appearance.

Thin veneers ready to be bonded to the front teeth

Zirconia dental veneers may suit several clinical situations:

  • Chipped or significantly damaged teeth
  • Stained teeth that do not respond to whitening
  • Closing gaps (diastemas) between teeth
  • Correcting teeth that are irregular in shape or too small
  • Restoring teeth worn by bruxism or natural wear

The clinic also provides zirconia crowns and veneers in other materials, and every treatment is adapted to the patient's situation. The initial examination looks at the teeth, the surrounding tissues, the bite and chewing patterns, and the type of treatment and material are chosen accordingly.

Pros and cons of zirconia veneers

Zirconia veneers are chosen mainly for their combination of a tooth-colored look and high strength. Zirconia is more fracture-resistant than conventional porcelain, but teeth grinding (bruxism) raises the risk of failure of ceramic veneers: in a study of porcelain veneers, the risk of failure was 7.7 times higher in patients with bruxism (Beier et al., Int J Prosthodont, 2012). Patients who grind therefore need a prior assessment and a night guard, even when the veneer is made of zirconia.

Aesthetics

Newer zirconia is more translucent than before, although usually less so than porcelain and glass-ceramic. The color of the veneer can be matched to the natural teeth, and like other ceramics, zirconia keeps its color over time and resists staining better than resin-based materials such as composite or nano-ceramic veneers.

Biocompatibility

Zirconia is considered to have good biological compatibility with oral tissues. It contains no metal, so it is also an option for patients with metal sensitivities.

Good to know: as with any ceramic veneer, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed, so the treatment is irreversible. The reduction is much smaller than for a full crown, and the clinic's approach is to preserve as much natural tooth as possible. An examination with Dr Haim Aseriel will show whether zirconia veneers suit your situation or whether another material would be better.

At the clinic, zirconia veneers have been used to restore front teeth affected by wear, fractures or deep stains. Two examples:

Case from the clinic

A 45-year-old woman had worn front teeth after years of bruxism (teeth grinding). Her front teeth had become noticeably short, and she avoided smiling in photos. Zirconia veneers restored the length and shape of her teeth, in a material strong enough for her heavy biting forces.

Case from the clinic

A man had internal stains on his teeth from medication taken in childhood, and several whitening treatments had not helped. Thin zirconia veneers covered the stains while keeping a natural look.

Zirconia vs porcelain veneers: side by side

Zirconia and traditional porcelain differ in strength, translucency and the amount of clinical data available. In full mouth rehabilitation, zirconia is used mostly for crowns and bridges, because of its high fracture resistance.

Zirconia is stronger than traditional porcelain and glass-ceramic, but clinical follow-up on zirconia veneers is much shorter than for porcelain and E.max veneers (Klein et al., J Esthet Restor Dent, 2025).

2.6

Average years of follow-up on zirconia veneers (systematic review, 2025)

In a 3-year controlled study of 60 veneers, E.max veneers showed slightly better aesthetics and translucency than translucent zirconia veneers, with no statistically significant difference (Fawakhiri et al., Clin Exp Dent Res, 2023).

Shade guide used to match the veneer color to the natural teeth

Aesthetically, newer zirconia materials offer more natural translucency that imitates enamel. Traditional porcelain was long considered more aesthetic, and the gap has narrowed: modern zirconia allows control of shade and translucency to match neighboring natural teeth.

How zirconia veneers are made and placed

Making zirconia veneers is a precise process that combines digital technology with clinical skill.

01

Full assessment and tooth preparation

At the first visit, the teeth are assessed and the treatment is planned. Once the plan is approved, the tooth is prepared: a thin layer, a fraction of a millimeter, is usually removed from the surface, keeping as much natural tissue as possible.

02

CAD/CAM design and milling

The teeth are scanned digitally, at the clinic with a Shining 3D Aoralscan 3, to create an accurate virtual model, without conventional impression material. Software designs the veneer, an Amann Girrbach milling machine in the clinic's on-site dental lab, run by a dental technician, cuts it from a partially sintered zirconia block, and the veneer is then fired (sintered) at high temperature, which gives zirconia its final strength.

03

Try-in and bonding

A thin layer of porcelain is sometimes added over the zirconia to improve aesthetics, a technique called layered zirconia. At the final visit, the veneer is tried in and bonded with light-cured adhesive cements, with fine adjustments to color and texture for a natural look.

How much do zirconia veneers cost?

The cost of zirconia veneers depends on several factors related to the treatment and your specific case. The final price depends mainly on the complexity of the case, the number of teeth treated, the type of zirconia chosen and the technology used to make the veneers. Zirconia veneers generally cost more than lower-cost options such as composite.

There are different types of zirconia, from semi-translucent zirconia for visible areas to more opaque, stronger zirconia for back teeth that carry heavy loads, and each is priced differently. How much veneers cost also depends on the laboratory work and the number of visits needed.

At the consultation, your case is reviewed and a personalized treatment plan is proposed. The quote is given in writing and lists what is included, before treatment begins. Itemized receipts are provided that you can submit to your insurer if you request reimbursement; coverage depends on your policy.

How long do zirconia veneers last?

How long zirconia veneers last is the main open question about this material.

According to a 2025 systematic review, all the zirconia veneers studied survived after an average follow-up of about 2.6 years, but there are no long-term data on zirconia veneers yet.

For comparison, in the same review, feldspathic porcelain veneers and E.max (lithium disilicate) veneers reached a survival rate of about 96% after roughly ten years (Klein et al., J Esthet Restor Dent, 2025).

Zirconia's strength gives it high resistance to fracture and wear. However, in patients with bruxism (teeth grinding) or who tend to chew on hard objects, the risk of failure of ceramic veneers rises, so a night guard and avoiding hard objects are recommended.

Beyond strength, zirconia stays color-stable over time, like other ceramics, and resists stains from coffee, tea, wine or smoking better than resin-based materials.

How to care for zirconia veneers

Proper care helps zirconia veneers last longer and keep their appearance over time.

1. Daily oral hygiene

Brush twice a day with a soft or electric toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste. Clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes to remove plaque and bacteria from areas a toothbrush cannot reach, especially along the gumline around the veneers.

2. Habits to avoid

Avoid habits that can damage zirconia veneers, such as chewing hard objects, cracking nuts or opening packages with your teeth. Although zirconia is very durable, it can still be damaged under extreme force. When zirconia veneers are used for crooked teeth or bite problems, a night guard is especially important to prevent damage from grinding or uneven pressure. A custom night guard protects the veneers in people who grind or clench.

3. Regular check-ups

Regular visits to the dentist and the dental hygienist are part of looking after zirconia veneers. How often you need a check-up depends on your oral health and your individual risk of tooth decay and gum disease. For many patients it is every six months; for others it is more or less often, as advised by the dentist. At check-ups, the veneers are examined and cleaned with suitable instruments, and problems are spotted early, together with the health of the natural teeth and gums around them.

4. Staining foods and drinks

Be careful with foods and drinks known to stain, such as coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. Although zirconia is relatively stain-resistant, surface stains may build up over the long term. Patients whose teeth gap was closed with zirconia veneers should clean carefully around the veneers, since plaque buildup there can cause gum inflammation and affect the stability of the restoration.

Zirconia veneers: consultation before treatment

Zirconia veneers can restore both the look and the function of the teeth, but choosing the right treatment requires a thorough discussion with your dentist. At Dr Haim Aseriel's clinic, the consultation is adapted to each patient's mouth and to his or her aesthetic, functional and health needs. It includes an examination of the teeth, gums and bite, and a review of the suitable options.

Professional advice is especially important for complex cases such as protruding teeth or other significant aesthetic concerns. At the consultation, the pros and cons of zirconia veneers are compared with other options, such as porcelain laminate veneers, E.max crowns or other restorations. Photos, digital scans and, where available, a digital simulation help illustrate the expected result.

The consultation also covers the lifespan of each material, care requirements and how they fit your lifestyle, explaining what is known and what is not yet known. The final decision on the type of veneer is made together with you, once you have all the information. Zirconia veneers: frequently asked questions

Zirconia veneers are thin veneers made of zirconium dioxide (zirconia), a strong, metal-free ceramic, bonded to the front surface of a tooth to improve its shape, color or size. They are a relatively new option alongside porcelain veneers and E.max (lithium disilicate) veneers.

Zirconia veneers are stronger than porcelain veneers, while porcelain and glass-ceramics such as E.max are more translucent and are the classic aesthetic choice for front teeth. Both materials resist staining. The main difference is the evidence: porcelain and E.max veneers have more than a decade of clinical follow-up, whereas zirconia veneers so far have only short-term data.

A zirconia veneer covers only the front surface of the tooth and requires removing a thin layer of enamel, while a zirconia crown covers the whole tooth and needs more preparation. A veneer is considered when the tooth is fairly healthy and mainly its appearance needs to change; a crown is chosen when the tooth is broken or extensively damaged.

How long zirconia veneers last is not yet known. According to a 2025 systematic review, all the zirconia veneers studied survived after an average follow-up of about 2.6 years, but there are no long-term data yet. In the same review, porcelain and E.max veneers reached a survival rate of about 96% after roughly ten years.

Zirconia veneers are cared for much like natural teeth: brushing twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, not biting on hard objects, and wearing a night guard if you grind your teeth. How often you need a check-up depends on your oral health and individual risk, as advised by your dentist.
